BALTIMORE (April 6, 2018) – Coach
Lauren McCoy and the Howard University Softball team split Friday's twinbill at Coppin State (CSU). HU dropped game one, 7-3, but bounced back with a 16-6 victory in the nightcap.
With the win, HU snapped its eight-game slide and brief three-game skid against the Eagles.
In the nightcap, Howard manufactured 16 runs on a season-high 17 hits. Five Bison registered multi-hit performances, led by freshman
Trinity Gibbs going a season-best 4-of-5 at the plate with three runs scored and two RBIs.
Senior
Brooklyn Emory provided the big bat, going 3-of-5 with five RBIs and two homers in the victory.
HU jumped out to an early 2-0 advantage, but CSU (10-15, 7-4 MEAC) sliced the deficit in half after one, 2-1.
Howard responded with a seven-run inning in the second, capped off by a two-run blast from Emory, 9-1.
Coppin State fought back, scoring three times in the bottom second and trimmed the margin down to five, 9-4.
After scoring a run in the third, 10-4, Emory manufactured a RBI-double, followed by a two-run double from newcomer
Breanna Robinson and ballooned the lead to nine, 13-4.
CSU refused to go away, scoring a pair of runs in the fourth, 13-6, but Howard delivered the knockout blow with a two-run shot to centerfield by Emory.
Gibbs led the way in game one, posting two doubles and a RBI.
After five, the Eagles held a 7-0 advantage until HU scored a pair of runs on RBI-doubles from Gibbs and freshman
Alyssa Lavine, 7-2.
Howard tallied another run in the seventh, but the Eagles would keep HU at bay.
The rubber match is scheduled for Tuesday, April 24 at 3 p.m. in Baltimore.
HU (4-29, 2-6 MEAC) returns to D.C. for a three-game series against Norfolk State (April 14-15).
