WASHINGTON (April 22, 2018) – With only 10 Bison competing, the shorthanded Howard University Women's Lacrosse team battled, but fell to Wofford, 17-5, at Greene Stadium on Senior Day.
Entering Sunday's showdown with the Terriers, Coach
Karli Brentlinger had several Bison missing due to injuries or suspensions, including the squad's leading scorer senior
Natia Warren. The New Jersey product missed today's contest because of picking up a red card Friday versus Furman; thus, forced to sit due to NCAA policies.
Four Bison scored in the match, led by newcomer
Terie Young registering her first collegiate goals in a losing effort.
After intermission, Howard manufactured four goals from four different Bison: Young; senior
Amerra Sheckles; and freshmen
Shelby Lee and
Summer Taylor. Like Young, all three women recorded their first collegiate goal in the loss.
Wofford opened the contest with three consecutive goals until Young ended HU's scoring drought at the 21:55 mark, 3-1.
For the final 20 minutes before intermission, Wofford closed out the half scoring nine unanswered while taking a commanding 12-1 advantage at the break.
Before today's match, HU Athletics took a step back and honored those student-athletes that gave their blood, sweat, and hard work to the women's lacrosse program. Howard showed their appreciation for Sheckles, Chandrell Chistopher,
Alexi Swisher and
Tahirah Williams.
For Wofford (2-14), they grabbed their second straight win after starting the season 0-14. Delaney Irwin and Sophie Smith each posted three goals in the victory.
Howard (1-11) concludes the regular season with Kennesaw State. Match time is slated for 1 p.m. at Greene Stadium.
