WASHINGTON (March 8, 2018) – Coach
Karli Brentlinger and the Howard University Women's Lacrosse team grabbed its first win of the season after knocking off crosstown foe District of Columbia (UDC), 17-7, at Greene Stadium.
With the victory, HU snapped a 42-match skid dating back to April 2014.
"I am very proud of the leadership our upperclassmen displayed on the field today," said Brentlinger. "I am excited to continue seeing our freshmen step up in a big way. We are looking forward to our next game at Longwood."
Midfielders
Ashley Duncan and
Natia Warren led the Bison attack, combining for 13 goals and two assists. Warren scored nine points on eight goals and an assist while Duncan added six points (five goals and an assist) in the victory.
UDC trimmed the halftime margin down to four after a goal from Vanessa Valentine, but the Bison responded with a trio of goals from Warren, 10-3.
HU kept the pressure on as they outscored the Firebirds after halftime, 10-5, scoring the final three goals of the match.
Freshman
Lailah Robey had four points on three assists and a goal. Defensively, goalkeeper
Amerra Sheckles racked up six saves in the win.
Howard jumped out to an early 3-0 advantage before the Firebirds scored its first goal, 3-1. HU's momentum continued as they tallied four unanswered goals and closed the half strong to take a 7-2 intermission lead.
UDC (1-2) had four Firebirds score in the contest. Valentine, Shemara Jefferson, and Amy Rock each posted two goals in the loss.
HU (1-1) goes to Longwood, Va. to square off against Coach Brentlinger's alma mater, Longwood University. Match is set for 1 p.m.
