Lady Bears sweep season series

WASHINGTON (March 31, 2018) – Howard University Softball team dropped both games Saturday versus rival Morgan State (MSU). HU lost game one, 9-3, and then the Bison's comeback fell short in the nightcap, 8-6.

As a result, MSU (12-14, 4-2 MEAC) swept the season series, 3-0.

In game two, the Bison (3-28, 1-5 MEAC) generated six runs on eight hits. Freshman Jocelyn Avera led the way, going 2-of-3 at the plate with a pair of stolen bases and a walk. Senior Brooklyn Emory and junior Alannah Baiyina each delivered two RBIs in the loss.

Morgan State jumped out to an early 4-0 advantage until Emory and Baiyina each drove in a run and sliced the margin in half after two frames, 4-2.

After a two-run shot from MSU's Giselle Alvarez, 6-2, the Lady Bears added two more runs and took a commanding 8-2 lead midway through the six.

HU refused to go down without a fight, scoring four times in the six, 8-6, but the Bison's comeback would fall short in the seventh as Morgan State's Stephanie Rundlett sat down all three batters.

In game one, Howard was limited to three scattered hits.

Morgan State took an 1-0 lead, but freshman Breanna Robinson scored on a wild pitch in the second and tied the contest, 1-1.

Moments later, Emory gave HU its first lead of the game after grounding out to second, 2-1.

Redshirt freshman Zaria Hall kept the rally going as she increased the Bison's lead on a wild pitch, 3-1.

Top three, Morgan State answered with two runs and reclaimed the lead, 4-3. MSU never looked back as they manufactured five runs in the fifth and sixth innings combined.

On April 7-8, the Bison goes to Baltimore where they will face Coppin State. Saturday's doubleheader begins 1 p.m. and Sunday's seven-inning game starts at noon.
