ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (March 10, 2018) – Howard University Softball team were defeated twice on Day Two of the Lobo Classic, hosted by New Mexico.
HU lost its second bout with Sacramento State, 17-1, and then took on the host team where they fell by the identical score, 17-1.
Senior
Brooklyn Emory and sophomores
Noel Merritt and
Monica Thompson each registered a hit in the game one loss.
After scoring two unearned runs, the Hornets pounded out nine runs and took a 11-0 advantage after two.
Sacramento State's momentum continued, combining for six runs in the fourth and five innings, 17-0.
Freshman
Breanna Robinson delivered the Bison's lone run on a sac fly to left center, bringing home Merritt, 17-1.
In the nightcap, Emory, freshmen
Trinity Gibbs and
Niaja Nolan posted hits in a losing effort.
New Mexico held a 1-0 lead until they manufactured 10 runs in the second, taking a 11-run advantage, 11-0, after two.
Top thee, Emory belted a solo shot to right center and put HU on the board, 11-1, but the Lobo kept the pressure on.
Bottom six, New Mexico added six insurance runs and enforced the mercy rule after five, 17-1.
Howard (2-20) wraps up the weekend with a rematch against St. Mary's. First-pitch is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. (ET)
