WASHINGTON (February 28, 2018) – Howard University Women's Lacrosse team could not overcome its first half deficit as they lost its season opener at crosstown rival American (AU), 19-8.
AU scored 14 goals in the first 30 minutes of action while being held to only four after intermission.
Midfielder
Ashley Duncan led the way, recording four goals and an assist. Senior
Natia Warren scored three times while newcomer
Jillian Jones registered her first collegiate goal in a losing effort.
Duncan scored the Bison's first goal after intermission, but the Eagles answered with three straight goals, 18-5. HU fought back and scored three times in the final 13 minutes.
Goalkeeper
Amerra Sheckles played all 60 minutes where she racked up 13 saves in the loss.
Trailing, 2-0, Warren put Howard on the board and sliced the margin in half, 2-1. After a spectacular goal from Duncan at the 21:27 mark, the Eagles outscored HU, 7-2, and took a commanding 10-goal lead at the break, 14-4.
American (1-3) picked up its first win of the season. Erica Skowron tallied 11 points (six assists and five goals) while Emma Vinall scored six times in the victory.
On March 8, Howard (0-1) hosts District of Columbia in their home opener. Thursday's contest starts 3 p.m. at Greene Stadium.
