CARY, N.C. (February 23, 2018) – After racking up 28 runs over the past two games, the Howard University Softball team was held to only one run in the doubleheader losses to North Carolina Central (NCCU).
NCCU (2-6) won game one, 4-1, then blanked HU (2-8) in the nightcap, 8-0.
HU avoided the no-no in game one, thanks to a double from junior
Jasmine Gibson.
N.C. Central took the early lead in the second, but sophomore Kamy Tillman delivered a RBI-fielder's choice to send home freshman
Alyssa Lavine and tied the game, 1-1.
Bottom six, the Eagles tallied six runs to down Howard, 4-1.
In the nightcap, freshman
Trinity Gibbs and
Niaja Nolan managed to get the Bison's lone hits.
After taking the early 1-0 advantage, NCCU exploded for five runs in the second and took a six-run lead. Bottom four, the Eagles added two more runs; thus, enforcing the eight-run mercy rule.
NCCU senior Courtney Mirabella picked up the win in both games, tossing all 12 innings and only allowing just three hits while striking out 20 Bison.
Tomorrow (Feb. 24), Howard wraps up its Tar Heel swing in Elon, N.C. where the Elon Phoenix await. The twinbill starts 1 p.m.
