Howard Falls in a Last Minute Loss to Richmond

RICHMOND, Va. - The Howard University (HU) women's basketball team (5-3) fell to the University of Richmond (2-7) today, 67-60, in the final minutes of the game.

Richmond opened the game with a three-pointer by Kailyn Fee. Howard junior Star Fitzgerald-Green responded with a layup. Spiders freshman Aniyah Carpenter hit a second three-pointer to go up 6-2. Howard was down 10-5 going on a 5-0 run to tie the game, 10-10, with just over a minute remaining in the first quarter. The Bison closed the quarter behind the Spiders, 13-10.

The second quarter began with a Spider turnover followed by a missed Bison three-pointer. A quick layup by Jayana Ervin put Richmond on the board first. A foul by Imani Mustaf send Howard's Imani Bryant to the line to bring the score to 11-15. Both teams were scoreless for over two minutes. Finally, Ayonna Williams and Asia McCants broke the drought with layups to tie the game, 15-15. Krislyn Marsh gave the Bison their first lead of the quarter. Mccants, Marsh and Jayla Thornton contributed points to hold the lead until a three pointer by Kailyn Fee brought the Spiders ahead. Howard went into the half down by one, 23-24.

The third quarter saw Howard in its best element of the game. HU started the quarter down but a Sarah Edmond jumper followed by a Krislyn Marsh layup gave the Bison a 27-26 lead. Edmond, scoring 13 points in the quarter, was four of five from the field.  There were several lead changes in the third quarter; however, the Bison outscored their opponent and ended the third up by five, 47-42.

The fourth quarter was a fight to the finish for the Bison. Richmond opened it with a 7-2 run to erase the previous quarter's deficit and tying 49-49. Back and forth lead changes kept the game intense on both sides of the ball. The Bison held on to the lead up until the two minute mark. A three-pointer by Spiders Alex Parson gave Richmond momentum on their home court. The game ended, 60-67, with a Bison loss.

Sarah Edmond led the Bison with 19 points. She had three rebounds and shot 7 of 7 from the free throw line. Jayla Thornton had nine points and three rebounds. Both Krislyn Marsh and Asia McCants contributed eight points and three rebounds. The team shot 42.3 percent off 22-52 and 57 percent from downtown.
