PRINCESS ANNE, Md. (December 1, 2018) – Howard University Women's Track & Field team opened the indoor season with a first-place finish at the Eastern Shore Cappy Anderson Invitational, hosted by Maryland Eastern Shore.
Senior
Mi-ah Watkins (Bronx, N.Y.) headlined the day by winning the women's weight throw with a new school record (48'8"), shattering the previous mark set back in 2016 (45'57").
Sophomore
Rachel Edler (Stone Mountain, Ga.) had a pair of victories in the long jump (17'11") and triple jump (39'2.25"). Additionally, the Georgia native qualified for the 2019 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Indoor Championships in Landover, Md.
Second-year throwers
Kaylah Clark (Miami) and
Sophia Williams (Westbrook, Maine) and newcomer
Kailey Strozier finished first (37'5.75"), second (36'11.75", and third (34'9.5"), respectively, in the shot put.
On the track, junior
Sydney Benson (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.) and freshman
Essence Baker (South Brunswick, N.J.) placed first (1:19.00) and second (1:19.25), respectively, in the women's 500-meter run.
Benson and Baker, alongside sophomore
Destiny Stanford (Woolwhich Township, N.J.) and freshman
Melanie White (Orlando, Fla.) took first in the Distance Medley Relay, posting a 12:38.49 mark.
Individually, Stanford competed in the women's 3000-meter run where she took fifth overall (10:52.91) and solidified a spot in the MEAC Indoor Championships.
Junior standout
Uchechi Onuoha (Yardly, Pa.) won the women's 60-meter hurdles and advanced to the MEAC Indoor Championships, clocking in at 8.62.
Sophomore
Ozioma Scott (Georgetown, Guyana) was also victorious as she claimed the top spot in the 200-meter dash (25.78).
HU also went first and second in the women's 4x400 relay.
