WASHINGTON (November 29, 2018) -- The Howard University Bison won their fourth game of the season with a 73-59 victory over the George Mason University Patriots in Burr Gym.
It was an amazing night for freshman
Krislyn Marsh. She led the Bison, now 4-2 overall, with a career-high 26 points and 14 rebounds. "When Krislyn is able to stay in the game she is effective. She was able to stay out of foul trouble and did a great job," stated head coach
Ty Grace. "Playing 37 minutes, she had a good rhythm and got going. I was happy to see it and I hope she keeps it up."
This is the third win for the Bison by double digit points this season. Their last loss was a come from behind rally by Siena. Since that game Howard has done a turnaround on defense. "After our loss to Siena I really charged the team to lay on the defense. I challenged them to have a defensive focus and we showed that this week, holding both FDU and George Mason to less than 60 points. We paid more attention to getting stops and we were successful."
Marsh, who leads the team in rebounds, had been prone to foul trouble. She contained that in last night's game while stepping up offensively. Junior guard
Sarah Edmond had 18 points, six assists and three rebounds. The third double-digit scorer for the Bison was
Jayla Thornton with 11 points. "We have to continue to play defense. I just stress that a lot to the team. We know that we have good scorers but we have to be able to stop people," said Grace. "Having balance and people stepping up helps us. If we can continue to play defense and hold teams to 60 points, I think our level of play will sustain."
Howard shot 46.8 percent from the field compared to 31.9 percent for the Patriots. The Bison were 64.3 percent from the free throw line. Howard's largest lead of the night came in the fourth quarter. The Bison were up by 17 points in the last three minutes of the game.
Howard begins a four game road stretch against the Niagara Purple Eagles on December 1 at 3 p.m.
