Howard Volleyball Continues Winning Streak Defeating Morgan and Coppin in Baltimore

BALTIMORE (October 28, 2018) --- Howard University volleyball continued their winning streak this weekend after defeating Morgan State University on Friday and Coppin State University on Sunday in Baltimore. The Bison have now won eight consecutive games.

Howard vs. Morgan State

Set one between Morgan (12-11, 4-2 MEAC) and Howard (14-9, 6-0 MEAC) saw the Bison on the board first. Morgan led majority of the set. Howard closed the score gap late in the set, tying Morgan 20-20. The rally back was not enough to offset the end of set errors by the Bison. Morgan would take set one, 25-20.

The second set was another competitive match for the two teams. When the Bison secured a sizable lead the Bears would fight back to close it. Just like in the previous match, a 20-20 tie put the Bears in a position to win the set. However, they could not capitalize off of the opportunity. Howard prevailed in set two, 25-22.

Sets three and four were close and energetic. The pattern of play was similar in these two sets as they were in the previous sets. Howard ended them on top, 25-23 and 25-21, respectively.

Jurnee Tipton led the Bison with 14 kills, 20 digs and a rebound. Courtney Dalton had 13 kills and three blocks. Junior Kira Porter posted 10 kills, three aces and two blocks. Indira Dandridge had eight kills and a block. Tamia Dockery tallied 50 assists, eight digs and three kills. Fola Wilson added 22 digs, seven assists and an ace.

Howard vs. Coppin State

Howard (15-9, 7-0 MEAC) swept Coppin State (8-19, 3-4 MEAC) by set scores of 25-17, 25-20, 25-20.

Coppin was on the board first in set one. The Eagles struck early and often in the beginning, going up 8-2 before the Bison began to comeback. After tying 10-10 Howard wenton to take and keep the lead.

Again, the Eagles scored first in set two. The early gain for Coppin State resulted in back and forth lead changes between the two teams. Surging runs shifted momentum to and fro; however, the Bison came out on top.

The third set saw the Bison opening the board. Howard found itself in trouble early with the Eagles up 9-5. Coppin held the lead until Howard tied, 11-11. The Eagles did not let up, they continued to prove to be a formidable opponent, maintaining front runner status. The set remained close and it looked like Coppin would pull off the set win and extend the game. The Bison found their rhythm, making crucial late-set kills and ultimately ending the game with the win.

Kira Porter led the offensive efforts for the Bison with 13 kills, followed by Kailyn Williams' 10 kills. Porter displayed accuracy on the attack, hitting .571. Porter also had eight blocks and two assists. Defensively, liberos Fola Wilson and Abby Morrow contributed nine and seven digs, respectively. Senior setter Tamia Dockery had 34 assists, five digs and two kills.

Howard returns home for Military Appreciation Day on November 4 in Burr Gym. Game time is 7 p.m.
