WASHINGTON (January 6, 2018) – Howard University Women's Basketball team came up short versus Bethune-Cookman (BCU) in overtime, 59-55. The contest was held on the campus of Trinity Washington University.
 
Sophomore Sarah Edmond led all scorers with 24 points in 41 minutes of action. Senior Tajzhane Dopson registered 10 points after shooting perfect from the floor (4-of-4).
 
Edmond made an old-fashion three-point play and gave the Bison their largest lead of the game, 47-32, with 9:02 remaining.
 
BCU gradually chipped away at HU's advantage in the fourth. With less than a minute remaining, the Wildcats' Chasimmie Brown tied and forced OT, 51-51. Bethune-Cookman outscored Howard in the fourth, 19-9.
 
In overtime, Edmond made a pair of freebies and pulled the Bison with two, 57-55, but BCU's Emily Williams sealed the deal with clutch free throws.
 
Sophomore Ayonna Williams filled the stat sheet, posting seven points, five boards, five dimes, and five steals in a losing effort.
 
Bethune-Cookman's Ashanti Hunt drilled a long ball and put the Wildcats ahead early in the first, 7-4, but HU finished the period on an 8-4 run to take the lead, 12-11.
 
Midway through the second, Hunt's fastbreak layup gave BCU a six-point advantage, 21-15, but Howard fought back and closed out the half on a 11-2 spurt and took the halftime lead, 26-23.
 
BCU (10-4, 2-0 MEAC) had four Wildcats reach double-figures. Brown produced a double-double, 13 points and 10 boards, while Hunt had a team-high 16 points in the win.
 
On Jan. 9, Howard (4-11, 0-2 MEAC) renews its rivalry with Hampton in the Battle of the Real HU. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. and Tuesday's promotion is White Out.
