ORANGEBURG, S.C. (January 13, 2018) – Coach
Ty Grace and the Howard University Women's Basketball team earned its first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) victory of the season with a 68-58 decision at South Carolina State (SCSU).
HU (5-11, 1-2 MEAC) also picked up its first road win of the year in nine tries.
Offensively, the Bison shot a respectable 45-percent (23-of-51) from the floor and 73-percent (16-of-22) at the charity stripe. Additionally, Howard outrebounded the Lady Bulldogs, 45-36.
Sophomore
Sarah Edmond registered a game-high 18 points and six boards while fellow classmate
Ayonna Williams flirted with a double-double, 12 points and nine rebounds, in the victory.
After being deadlocked at the break, 28-28, HU outscored the Lady Bulldogs in the third, 19-11, and took an eight-point advantage into the fourth, 47-39.
Moments into the fourth, senior
Tajzhane Dopson scored on a layup and gave Howard its largest lead with 9:12 remaining, 51-41.
SCSU gradually chipped away at the deficit. With under two minutes left, a trey ball from South Carolina State's Kyesha Lewis cut the margin down to two, 58-56, but the Bison ended the game on a 10-2 run, 68-58.
Dopson added 14 points on 6-of-8 from the field.
Defensively, the Bison held SCSU under 30-percent (21-of-71) from the floor. Sophomore
Jayla Myles led the way with eight boards and three rejections while freshman
Curstyn Moore recorded three steals in the win.
HU trailed throughout the first half, but kept within striking distance. Before intermission, Dopson scored on a fast break and tied the contest, 28-28.
South Carolina State (5-10, 0-3 MEAC) was led by Bryeasha Blair with 17 points while Kemoni Jenkins and Jaquanna Murray chipped in 10 apiece.
Monday (Jan. 15), HU women continue its road swing at Savannah State. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
