WASHINGTON (January 22, 2018) – Howard University Women's Basketball team saw its three-game winning streak come to an end after a 76-68 loss against North Carolina A&T State (NCAT) inside Burr Gymnasium.
Coach
Ty Grace's squad entered Monday's clash shorthanded with two Bison missing in action, including the team's leading scorer sophomore
Sarah Edmond, who was absence due to an injury suffered in Saturday's victory over North Carolina Central.
Sophomore
Ayonna Williams, reigning Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Week, recorded a team-high 18 points and eight rebounds. Fellow classmate
Jayla Myles registered her second straight double-double, finishing with 11 boards (game-high) and 10 points in the loss.
Freshman
Curstyn Moore scored on a fast break layup and trimmed the margin down to a one-possession game at the 5:33 mark in the third period, 42-40. NCAT answered and finished the quarter on a 13-4 run and took a double-digit advantage after three, 55-44.
North Carolina A&T State's Quenswayla Story connected on a jumper and gave the Aggies its largest lead with more than seven minutes remaining, 57-45.
HU fought back and gradually chipped away at the deficit. With less than two minutes left, Williams made a pair of freebies and sliced the margin down to four, 64-60, but NCAT withstood the Bison's late charge and sunk several clutch free throws down the stretch.
Sophomore
Imani Bryant provided 11 points, five boards, two blocks, and two steals off the bench. Fellow classmate
Asia McCants was inserted into the starting lineup in place of Edmond where she finished with six points and two boards in a losing effort.
Williams scored a fast break layup with no time left on the clock and put the Bison ahead after one, 21-19.
North Carolina A&T State responded in the second period and outscored HU, 18-11, and held a five-point advantage at the break, 37-32.
NCAT (10-7, 5-0 MEAC) remains unbeaten in conference play. Four Aggies reached double figures, led by C'Coriea Foy with a game-high 22 points in the victory.
HU (7-12, 3-3 MEAC) looks to rebound at Maryland Eastern Shore Saturday (Jan. 27). Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
