PRINCESS ANNE, Md. (January 27, 2018) – Howard University Women's Basketball team fell on the road at Maryland Eastern Shore, 58-52, inside the William P. Hytche Athletic Center.
Sophomore
Jayla Myles led the way, posting her third straight double-double with 12 boards and 10 points while registering five blocks. Fellow classmate
Ayonna Williams had a game-high 15 points on 50-percent (7-of-14) shooting in a losing effort.
Moments into the fourth, Williams sliced the margin down to three after a layup, 38-35, but Maryland Eastern Shore responded with a 12-4 run and held their largest lead with 6:09 remaining, 50-39.
HU fought back and chipped away at the deficit, cutting the margin as low as five, but Howard's comeback would come up short.
Maryland Eastern Shore (6-14, 3-5 MEAC) was led by Bairesha Gill-Miles with a double-double, 13 points (team-high) and 10 rebounds (team-high).
Sophomore
Sarah Edmond tied the contest with a jumper, 6-6, at the 6:11 mark in the first quarter, but the Hawks scored 11 unanswered and held a double-digit lead, 17-6. Howard trailed after one, 19-10.
Gill-Miles connected on a jumper and gave the Hawks an 11-point advantage with 8:44 left before intermission, 23-12. Howard battled back and went on a 7-0 run, capped off by a trey ball from sophomore
Asia McCants, 23-19.
Maryland Eastern Shore extended its lead back to nine, but jumpers from Myles and senior
Tajzhane Dopson trimmed the margin down to five at the break, 28-23.
HU (7-13, 3-4 MEAC) returns to the hardwood next weekend where they host Florida A&M (Feb. 3) before traveling to Baltimore to meet Morgan State (Feb. 5). Saturday's clash begins 2 p.m. while Monday's showdown starts 5:30 p.m.
