RIVERSIDE, Calif. – After dropping their earlier match against San Jose State, the Howard Volleyball team could not come away victorious as they lost its tourney finale versus UC-Riverside (UCR) in straight sets (16-25, 18-25, 15-25).
Collectively, HU could not get into a rhythm as they hit .057 while the Highlanders attack percentage was more than .200 points higher.
Senior
Khaila Donaldson led the Bison attack with a team-best nine kills while producing eight digs in the loss.
Midway through the first, HU trailed only two, 14-16, until UCR finished the set on a 9-2 run to win game one, 16-25.
Howard scored the first point in set two, thanks to Donaldson, but the lead was short-lived as UC-Riverside would take a commanding 2-0 lead in the match, 18-25.
HU held a 6-1 advantage early in game three until the Highlanders stormed back and went on a 11-2 spurt, 8-12. Howard fought back and pulled within two after an ace from
Kira Porter, 12-14. After a brief timeout from UCR, the Highlanders responded with five consecutive points and never looked back to win the match, 15-25.
Tamia Dockery recorded a double-double, posting 26 assists and 11 digs. Defensively,
Fola Wilson manufactured 10 digs in a losing effort.
For UC-Riverside (5-1), Fabiana Rosas finished with a match-high 16 kills while Meg Graham added 11 kills. Chelsea Doyle ended her night with a double-double, 36 dimes and 10 digs.
On Sept. 8-9, the Bison's (1-6) road trip continues in Charlottesville, Va. for the Jefferson Cup where Ohio, Virginia Commonwealth, and Virginia await.
