OFFSEASON IN REVIEW
On Jan. 9, Howard University President, Dr.
Wayne A. I. Frederick announced Coach London as the new football head coach. London comes to D.C. after serving as an associate head coach/defensive line coach for the Maryland Terrapins. Before that, he was the head coach at Virginia and Richmond, respectfully, for eight seasons. In those eight years, London guided the Spiders to its first FCS Championship in only his first season while winning the 2011 ACC Coach of the Year with UVA.
On Feb. 1, Coach London announced 23 student-athletes who signed their National Letter of Intent, making their decision to become a Bison official. The Class of 2021 consist of kids from 14 different states, including eight from the DMV area. As a result, the Bison had No. 1 recruiting class in the conference.
On July 28, senior running back
Anthony Philyaw was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Preseason Offensive Player of the Year while sophomore wide receiver
Kyle Anthony was placed on the All-MEAC Second Team. Both Bison were also added to the Black College Football Player of the Year Award Watch List.
MATCHUP PREVIEW
Saturday night's showdown will be the first meeting between HU and UNLV.
Head Coach Tony Sanchez enters his third season with the Rebels. Last season, UNLV went 4-8 overall (3-5 Mountain West). This season, the Rebels were projected to finish third in their conference's West Division. Before the season, seniors Devonte Boyd and Mike Hughes, Jr. were selected to the 2017 Mountain West Football Preseason All-Conference Team.
Howard comes in with a fresh start after the hiring of Coach London. Offensively, the Bison will be led by Philyaw and Anthony. Freshman quarterback
Caylin Newton looks to make a splash at the helm for HU. Last season, the 5-foot-11, 185-pound quarterback threw for 3,322 yards with 33 touchdowns for Grady High School in Atlanta.
UPCOMING SCHEDULE
On Sept. 9, HU meets another FBS foe in Ohio where Kent State awaits. Game-time is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
Also, the Coach's show with Butch McAdams can be heard on WOL 1450AM or
