Offense Shines in Home Loss in A-SUN Opener

Six players score at least one goal for the Bison in their home opener

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Six different players scored at least one goal for the Howard women's lacrosse team, including three with three or more, but Delaware State scored the game's final six goals to post a 17-14 victory Sunday at Greene Stadium in the Atlantic Sun opener for both teams.

The 14 goals scored by the Bison (0-3) were the most since Apr. 14, 2015 when the lost at Delaware State, 17-15. That was also the last time the team had as many as six players score at least one goal.

The game featured five ties and four lead changes and following the fourth goal of the game from senior Asiyah Frank, Howard led 14-11 with 8:59 remaining. The team's three goal lead was its largest since an eight goal margin versus Delaware State at Greene Stadium on Apr. 3, 2014.

Frank set a new career high in both goals and points with four. She now has five goals in just three games, equaling her season total from a year ago.

However, the Hornets (1-1) answered just 31 seconds later on a free position shot by Kayla Yurkanin, keying a run of six unanswered goals for the visitors as they rallied for the three-goal victory.

Iman Hasan had a goal and two assists during the run, finishing the game with nine points on five goals and four assists. Yurkanin totaled three goals and one assist.

The Bison scored the game's first two goals of the game and led by the same margin before Hasan scored on an assist from Yurkanin with 48 seconds left in the first half to cut the Howard lead to 9-8 at halftime.

The Bison's one-goal lead was the first time that they did not trail at the half since they were tied with Mercer on the road, 9-9. Prior to today, the last time the Bison led at the break was 33 games ago, 7-5 against Delaware State in 2014.

In addition, Howard's nine goals in the first half were the most for the team since it had 12 in the second half at Delaware State on Apr. 14, 2015.

Senior Taylor Purks, who had just one goal in 29 career games entering this season, totaled three in the first half on Sunday, the last of which came on a free position shot with 1:01 remaining which allowed the Bison to take a one goal halftime lead.

Unfortunately for Howard in the opening half, it lost the services of its leading scorer from the last two seasons, junior Natia Warren, who was whistled for two yellow cards. With Warren on the bench, the Hornets outscored the Bison, 11-6.

In just over 25 minutes, Warren totaled two goals, four ground balls, five draw controls and three caused turnovers.

Junior Ashley Duncan scored her first goal in a Howard uniform and finished with three while freshmen Tea McFarlane and Alaya Hightower each picked up their first collegiate goals with one each.

Defensively, junior Amerra Sheckles made a career-high 13 saves, including seven in the second half. Hightower also had two caused turnovers.

The Bison continue their three-game home stand next Friday, March 31 when they host an Atlantic Sun contest with Stetson inside Greene Stadium beginning at 5:00 p.m.
