Howard Drops A Pair To Hampton

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Howard University softball team opened 2017 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) action with a pair of losses to Hampton on Saturday afternoon at the Nationals Youth Academy.

GAME ONE: Hampton 5, Howard 1

Alexa Walker (0-7) tossed a complete game for Howard in the first game of the day. She gave up five runs on nine hits with one strikeout.

The Lady Pirates struck first in the opening frame but Kamryn Tillman quickly tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first on a single to right field, which allowed Alannah Baiyina to scamper home from second.

Hampton broke the tie in the fourth on a RBI single up the middle. The Lady Pirates also tacked on a pair of runs in the fifth on a triple and single for a 4-1 advantage.

Howard had a chance to score in the fifth with runners in scoring position but the squad wasn't able to drive them in.

Imani Ballard, Baiyina, Tillman and Brooklyn Emory each tallied a hit for the Bison. Tillman also recorded the only RBI for the team.

GAME TWO: Hampton 7, Howard 2

A four-run sixth inning pushed the Lady Pirates (7-13, 2-0 MEAC) to their second victory of the afternoon.

In the circle, Alex Flynn (0-5) went the distance for 7.0 innings, allowing 10 hits and seven runs (six earned) with one strikeout.

Imani Ballard paced the team with two hits, one run and a RBI. Kamryn Tillman posted one hit and one run. Brooklyn Emory also got a hit in.

With the bases loaded on three straight walks and two outs in the first, Emory was hit by a pitch to put the Bison on the board, 1-0. However, Hampton locked the score at 1-1 in the second on a bunt single.

Ballard responded by crushing a home run over the center field fence for a 2-1 lead in the bottom half of the second.

Hampton got out front in the fourth, 3-2, after recording a pair of runs on a Howard error and sacrifice bunt. The Lady Pirates broke the game open with four runs in the sixth, which included a two-run homer.

UP NEXT: Howard (0-18, 0-2 MEAC) will wrap up its series with a single game against Hampton on Sunday, Mar. 26 at noon.
