SAN JUAN, P.R. – In the final game of the Puerto Rico Classico, the Howard University softball team dropped a 7-2 decision to Albany on Sunday afternoon.
Back-to-back three-run innings in the second and third handed Albany (11-5) a 6-0 lead. The Great Danes didn't stick to one method to get on the board as they used a two-RBI double, wild pitch, RBI single, walk and Howard error for the advantage.
The Bison (0-16) responded in the top of the sixth with two runs. Alannah Baiyina was up first with a single before stealing second. Kamryn Tillman earned a walk and both players successfully stole another base. Baiyina scored on a wild pitch and Tillman rounded the bases on a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to 6-2.
A single through the left side allowed Albany to plate the final run of the contest for the 7-2 win.
Alex Flynn (0-4) was tagged with the loss after tossing two innings for three hits, three runs, two walks and a strikeout. Monica Thompson got into the circle for 0.1 innings, in which she gave up three runs. Alexa Walker was able to cool off the Great Danes attack and pitched the remaining 3.2 innings with five hits, one run and three strikeouts.
Baiyina, Imani Ballard, Chloe Lyon and Deja Henderson each had a hit for the Bison. Ballard is currently on a six-game hitting streak.
Howard was scheduled to host Rider in a doubleheader on Tuesday, Mar. 14 but the pair of games has been cancelled due to the projected snow storm headed for Washington, D.C.
