Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Howard Turns to Seniors in Win Over UMES

Washington, DC—Tyler Stone scored a season-high 19 points to lead five players in double figures as Howard defeated the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, 79-69 in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference men's game at Burr Gymnasium. It was Senior Night for eight members of the team who were playing their last home game.

Normally a reserve, Stone, a senior, got a chance to start and he and his senior teammates all contributed to the win which stopped a two-game skid and gave Howard (8-22, 5-10 in the MEAC) a sweep of the Hawks (11-19, 8-7 in the MEAC).

A 6-7 forward from Toronto, Stone waited until his senior season to have the best game of his career, converting on 6 of 7 from the field—including his first-ever dunk—and grabbed 9 rebounds and blocked a career-best 4 shots.

The win was not pretty but it was hard and gritty, the way head coach Kevin Nickelberry likes. After trading blows with the Hawks, the Bison were able to take a 42-35 lead at the half on the play of senior center Marcel Boyd, who came out of a prolonged season slump by scoring 10 points and Stone who was a perfect 4 for 4 for 9 points.

It must be noted that senior Prince Okoroh, who has missed the last two seasons due to personal reasons and has played in only one game this season, gave the Bison some added inspiration when he started and hit a three pointer early.

The Hawks rallied on the scoring of Bakari Copeland and Logan McIntosh to take a 59-58 lead at the 6:10 mark, but the Bison got some surprise scoring production from Kofi Andoh and reserve Jalen Jones to keep the visitors at bay. They and Damon Collins teamed to put together a 10-0 run over three minutes to take a 68-58 lead with less than three minutes remaining.

It marked the first time all season that Howard has placed five players in double figures. Stone led the way with 19 points and just missed a double double with 9 rebounds; Collins had only one field goal he converted 12 of 14 from the charity stripe while adding 7 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals to his stat line. Boyd, Andoh and freshman Charles "CJ" Williams each contributed 12.

Mangham did not add much in the scoring area but he grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds to help the Bison outrebound MDES, 46-37 while also holding an advantage at the free throw line, 37-14.

The Hawks were led by Copeland with 16, McIntosh with 14, Dontae Caldwell with 12 and Tyler Jones with 11 off the bench.

NEXT UP: The Bison close out the regular season on March 2 when they visit Delaware State in Dover, DE. Game tips off at 7:30 pm.
