Howard Loses Season Finale to Delaware State

Dover, DE---Solomon "Solo" Mangham scored a team-high 18 points and James "JT" Miller came off the bench to add 16, but Delaware State used a balanced attack as four players scored in double figures as the Hornets pulled away to a 66-56 win over Howard in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference men's game at Memorial Hall. It was the season finale for both teams and they now await the seedings for the upcoming MEAC tournament, which gets underway on Monday.

Delaware State (10-21, 7-9 in the MEAC) jumped out to the early lead on the scoring of DeAndre Haywood (10 points) and Kavon Waller (9 points), who combined for 19 of their team's 29 first half points.

Howard (7-22, 5-11 in the MEAC) was able to keep pace with the hosts on the scoring of Mangham, who led all scorers with 12 points on 4 of 5 shooting from the three-point line.

Charles "CJ" Williams, the team's leading scorer struggled all night and finished with only four points, all coming from the free throw line.

"He waited until the last game of the season to have his worst game," said Howard Coach Kevin Nickelberry. "I hope that he has gotten it out of his system and not carry over to the tournament"

With Williams unable to provide scoring help, the Bison turned to Miller, who missed the last two game with a thigh contusion. The 6-4 red-shirt junior tallied 10 of his points after intermission, but no none else was able to contribute.

The Hornets got big second half from DeVaughn Mallory, Joe Lewis and Haywood, who combined for 24 second half points.

Howard was able to put together and get within one twice, but each time Mallory or Lewis would come up with a key basket. Down the stretch, it was Haywood had the Bison playing catchup, converting on 8 of 10 free throws.

The game was won in the paint area where Delaware State outrebounded the Bison, 45-30, 18 coming off the offensive glass. Mangham and Miller combined for 12 of 24 while the rest of the team went 8 for 29.

"The game was won inside," noted Nickelberry. "When Marcel (Boyd) went out with foul trouble, they took advantage with their bigs. They killed us on the offensive glass."

Haywood led all scorers with 20, Waller with 13, Devin Morgan with 12 and Mallory with 10 and 14 rebounds for a double double.
