FARMVILLE, Va. - Howard University women's lacrosse junior
Natia Warren scored both of her goals in the first half to pull the Bison within one, but that would be as close as they dropped their season opener on the road to Longwood Wednesday, 24-2 at Burger Jackson Field.
The Bison (0-1), who have lost four-straight season openers since a 20-10 victory over Winthrop on Feb. 8, 2013, got a career-high 10 saves from junior
Amerra Sheckles who made her 22nd career appearance and 13th start, but just her sixth in goal.
Led by a natural hat-trick by Stephanie Roberts, the Lancers (2-2) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the game's first 5:15 before Warren scored back-to-back, the last coming with 16:39 left in the first half to bring Howard within one.
The team's leading scorer a year ago with 25 goals and 27 points, Warren now has 39 goals and 42 points in just 22 career games for an average of almost two points per game.
However, Longwood answered just 50 seconds later with the first of seven goals in a span of 5:22 to take a commanding 10-2 lead with 10:27 to play.
The Lancers led 13-2 at halftime after out-shooting the Bison 28-4 and forcing 16 turnovers. Sheckles made seven of her 10 saves in the opening half.
Longwood scored 11 goals on 16 shots in the second half while holding Howard scoreless.
Warren added six draw controls for the Bison and now has 68 for her career, ranking her seventh all-time in school history. She needs just two more to pass Ashley Foote (2010-11) for sixth.
Senior
Asiyah Frank finished with two ground balls and one caused turnover to give her 30 for her career, one shy of tying former teammate
Taylor Gainey (2012-16) for fifth in school history.
In her first collegiate game, freshman
Huonna McCarthy led the team defensively with four ground balls and two caused turnovers while freshman
Ashley Duncan added three draw controls and two ground balls.
Riley Dolan totaled eight points for the Lancers, totaling four goals and four assists while Roberts and Charleigh Kondas each had five goals. Despite allowing two goals and making just one save, Imani West got the win in just over 25 minutes in goal.
Howard will now have 24 days until its next game at Radford on Saturday, March 18 after the Bison's home opener on Wednesday, March 8 against Robert Morris was canceled.
