Brent Leiba and the No. 3 Howard University Women's Soccer team advanced to the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Semifinals after eliminating rival No. 6 Mississippi Valley State (MVSU), 4-1, at the Prairie View A&M (PVAU) Soccer Complex.
Senior Kela Gray put on a show as she recorded a hat-trick, scoring three goals for the Bison.
Gray, All-SWAC First Team selection, put HU on the board with a shot in the low right corner, 1-0.
At the 21-minute mark, junior Jasmin Miller assisted Gray with her second goal and gave the Bison a 2-0 lead at the break.
After intermission, MVSU's Sheyenne Bonnick sliced the deficit in half after an unassisted goal, 2-1.
Freshman Aleeya Sawyer responded with a shot in the low left corner and increased the lead, 3-1.
A minute later, Gray delivered the hat-trick with a straight shot to the back of the net and put the match out of reach, 4-1.
Senior Gabrielle Emilien, All-SWAC Second Team honoree, played all 90 minutes while recording five saves in the victory.
HU squares off against No. 2 Grambling State in the SWAC Semifinals Friday. Match time is set for 6:30 p.m. (ET).
