MATCHUP PREVIEW
This will be the 38
th meeting between HU and FAMU with the Rattlers leading the all-time series, 28-9. Both programs resume their rivalry after a two-year hiatus.
On Oct. 18, 2014, Greg McGhee turned in another spectacular effort, accounting for all of his team's offense and staging a furious second half rally before time ran out as HU fell, 31-28, to Florida A&M before an overflow Homecoming crowd at Greene Stadium.
"Our mindset is that it's another playoff game for us," London stated during his weekly teleconference. "It's an away game and it's their senior day so it's going to be an emotional day for them."
FAMU (3-6, 2-4 MEAC) will celebrate their graduating seniors before its final home game of the season. Last week, the Rattlers defeated Morgan State, 34-31, in a back and forth battle.
Florida A&M remains in the middle of the pack in both offense and defense; however, the Rattlers rank No. 2 in conference play in pass defense (168.4).
"You want to recognize who starts everything," London expressed. "They have a lot of players who are fast and athletic."
For Howard (5-3, 4-1 MEAC), they are seeking their first winning season in five years. This season, the Bison have scored 30 or more points on four separate occasions while ranking 22
nd in the country in total offense (431.1 per game). Currently, HU leads the nation in passing yards per completion, led by College Football Performance Awards (CFPA) FCS National Performer of the Year candidate freshman quarterback
Caylin Newton.
"Our quarterback is a freshman, but he has had to earn his keep," London stated. "He's learning as the season has gone on, but he's become a better student of the game."
Defensively, the young Bison continue to improve weekly while making its mark with key game-changing plays. Howard has recovered a league-leading 12 fumbles on the season, which ranks No. 2 in the nation behind Lamar (13). Furthermore, HU sits No. 12 in the country with three defensive touchdowns.
LAST TIMEOUT
HU held off South Carolina State and spoiled the Bulldogs' homecoming with a 28-20 victory. Howard earned its third consecutive win while snapping their 15-year drought against the Bulldogs, dating back to 2002.
"They are a very good football team," said Coach London. "The credit goes to our players and coaches. We're doing a lot of first that hasn't been done in a long time. We're very thankful for the win."
Howard generated 365 total offense on 75 plays. Deep-threat sophomore
Jequez Ezzard had a game-high 144 receiving yards, including a 94-yard touchdown. On the ground, graduate running back
Dezmond Wortham led the Bison rushing attack with 82 yards on 15 carries in the victory.
Defensively, freshman
Aaron Walker produced a team-best eight tackles (seven solo). Redshirt senior
Devin Rollins added five solo tackles, including three tackles for loss and a pass breakup in the win.
