Mike London and the Howard University Football team scored 35 points in the second half to dominate Delaware State (DSU), 52-23, at Alumni Stadium. As a result, HU scored 50 points in a game for the first time since 2014.
HU racked up a season-high 628 total yards, including 342 in the air. Freshman
Caylin Newton threw for 285 yards and two touchdowns. The Georgia native also rushed for 81 yards in the victory.
Both squads were deadlocked, 10-10, until senior
Elijah Anglin returned a game-changing 96-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown and put the Bison ahead at the half, 17-10.
Howard scored on its first possession after intermission with a 49-yard touchdown pass from Newton to senior
Guy Lemonier Jr., 24-10.
DSU responded with a seven-play, 78-yard drive and sliced the deficit back in half, 24-17, but the Bison's lightning-quick offense kept the Hornets' defense unbalance.
With less than four minutes left in the third, Newton connected with sophomore
Kyle Anthony for a 26-yard back shoulder touchdown, 31-17. Graduate running back
Dezmond Wortham closed the quarter with an 18-yard run and gave HU a 21-point advantage after three, 38-17.
Early into the fourth, senior
Anthony Philyaw sprinted through the left side and leaped over a DSU defender for a 20-yard touchdown run, 45-17.
On HU's next possession, redshirt senior
Da'Vaun Johnson capped off a seven-play, 75-yard drive with a six-yard touchdown up-the-middle, 52-23.
Anthony and sophomore
Jequez Ezzard each had 100-yard receiving performances. Anthony registered a team-high 135 yards on six catches while Ezzard caught four balls for 104 yards in the victory.
Lemonier Jr. capped off HU's opening drive with a 52-yard run, followed by a 44-yard field goal from
Dakota Lebofsky put the Bison ahead after one, 10-0.
In the second quarter, Delaware State rebounded and scored 10 unanswered to tie the contest, 10-10, before Anglin's game-changing play would down DSU on homecoming.
Defensively, the Bison recorded 12 tackles for losses and five sacks. Anglin filled the stat sheet with nine tackles (six solo), four tackle for losses, two sacks, and a 96-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown.
Saturday, Oct. 21, Howard meets Morgan State for HU Homecoming. Saturday's game begins 1 p.m. at Greene Stadium.
