WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Howard men's soccer team came away with its first win of the 2016 season after besting Virginia Military Institute, 2-0, on Saturday evening in its home opener at Greene Stadium. The Bison are 1-2 overall, while the Keydets fall to 0-3.
This is also the first victory for the Bison since the 2014 season.
Goalie Kenneth Hersey posted four saves on the day for Howard. VMI's net-minder Robert Allen also tallied four saves but allowed a pair of goals to slip past.
Howard outshot the Keydets by an 8-6 margin, while VMI earned nine corner kicks compared to the Bison's trio.
Rookie Andres Gomez scored the first goal of the season to give the Bison a 1-0 lead. On a fast break, Gomez dribbled around multiple defenders, drawing the goalie out of the net. He dodged the net-minder as he dove for the save and went top shelf for the tally.
The Keydets thought they had the equalizer off a rebound but the goal was waved off due to the player being offside.
In the 73rd minute, Cheick Traore delivered a long kick to the right side, which was caught by a sprinting Daniel Hart. Hart crossed the ball in the box to Gomez, who lifted it over the goalie's head for his second goal and a 2-0 Howard advantage.
The Bison return to the field on Tuesday, Aug. 6 at 4 p.m. to host Campbell.
