BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Howard women's soccer team continues Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play with a pair of matches this weekend. The Bison will start with Alabama A&M on Friday, Sept. 30 at 8 p.m. ET before facing Alabama State on Sunday, Oct. 2 at 1 p.m. ET. Both games will be played at the Sicard Hollow Athletic Complex.
The Bison (4-3-2, 1-0-1 SWAC) opened conference play last weekend with a 4-1 win over Alcorn State and a 2-2 tie with Mississippi Valley State. Kela Gray paced the team with five points on a pair of goals and an assist. Hollie Cartwright, Sara Vaughan and Anna Mitchell also tallied goals over the weekend.
Mitchell currently tops the squad with three goals and an assist for seven points. Mackenzie Diotte has posted 553 minutes in goal on her way to 37 saves. She has a 2.28 goals against average, which leads the SWAC, while her .725 save percentage ranks fourth.
Alabama A&M has a 1-9 (0-1) overall record heading into Friday's match. The Bulldogs are on a four-game losing streak, with their last loss coming to Texas Southern, 2-1. The Bulldogs dropped a 5-0 decision to the Bison in last year's meeting.
Alabama State also lost to Texas Southern last weekend after beating Prairie View A&M. The Hornets have a 2-8 overall mark and a 1-1 record in the SWAC. When the two team met last year, Alabama State won the regular season tilt, 1-0, but Howard claimed the 2015 SWAC title with a 2-1 victory.
