ITTA BENA, Miss. – The Howard women's soccer team recorded its first Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) tie of the season after a 2-2 draw with Mississippi Valley State on Sunday afternoon at MVSU Soccer Field.
The Bison move to 4-3-2 (1-0-1 SWAC) on the season and the Devilettes are 0-5-1 (0-0-1 SWAC).
Junior Kela Gray came out of the gate with one mission in mind, score. Gray put the Bison ahead 1-0 after just 2:14 into the game after slipping past MVSU's Rita Gyasi.
MVSU responded with a pair of goals in a four minute span, both of which were scored by Laadi Issaka to give the Devilettes a 2-1 lead.
Three minutes into the second half, sophomore Anna Mitchell found the back of the net for the equalizer to tie the match at 2-2.
Sophomore Mackenzie Diotte got the start and made four saves before being replaced by junior Gabrielle Emilien. Emilien stayed in goal for 79 minutes and tallied two saves.
Howard outshot MVSU by a 15-10 margin, 11 of which were on goal.
Gray paced the team with four shots and Mitchell was close behind with three. Junior Noelle McCullom along with seniors Sandra Bond and Zion Clarke posted two shots each.
Howard continues SWAC play when it travels to Alabama A&M on Friday, Sept. 30 for a 8 p.m. ET match.
