WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Howard men's soccer team was unable to overcome an early deficit as it fell to Monmouth, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon at Greene Stadium. The Bison are now 1-5-2 on the season.

Redshirt senior net-minder Kenneth Hersey notched seven saves for Howard, while Monmouth's Zack Neugebauer earned five rejections.

Although the Bison took 13 shots, they were only able to put five on goal. The Hawks tallied 15 shots and forced Hersey to make a play on nine of them.

Hersey was put to work early, which included having to make a pair of saves in 24 seconds.

The Hawks got on the board off a corner kick taken by Jake Areman, who sailed the ball over the Bison defense to Michael Luke for the strike.

Both teams came out firing early in the second half as they traded long shots, which both goalies saved.

Sophomore Gavin Boyer showed off his impressive footwork in the box before letting a shot rip, but the keeper was on it to make the save.

Senior Xavier Rajpaul and Boyer each tallied a team-high three shots.

The Bison will begin a three-game road trip on Tuesday, Sept. 20 at UMBC. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
