WASHINGTON, D.C. – Freshman Hollie Cartwright's game-winner in the 71st minute pushed Howard past Longwood, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon at Greene Stadium.
The Lancers outshot the Bison by a margin of 11-6. Howard attempted a total of six corner kicks, including four in less than three minutes.
In the 6th minute, sophomore Makela Davidson got the ball on the left side and dribbled around her defender before slipping the ball into the left corner. It was her first goal of the season.
The Lancers knotted the game at 1-1 after Sydney Wallace caught her own rebound off the crossbar and put the ball back in.
Davidson tried to pull the Bison ahead in the 58th minute on a cross from sophomore Anna Mitchell but the attempt was saved.
Cartwright came through with the game-winner and her first collegiate goal in a Bison uniform. Sophomore Jasmin Miller dribbled down the right side before crossing the ball to a sprinting Cartwright, who chipped it in for the final 2-1 tally.
Sophomore goalkeeper Mackenzie Diotte made six saves for the Bison, compared to the Lancers' Maria Kirby with three saves.
The Bison will head to Fairfax, Va. to challenge George Mason on Thursday, Sept. 1 at 7 p.m.
