Women's Soccer Opens Season With 2-1 Win Over Cleveland State

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Howard University women's soccer team kicked off the 2016 season with a 2-1 victory over Cleveland State tonight in Greene Stadium.

Sophomore net-minder Mackenzie Diotte made a pair of saves for the Bison. Although Howard came away with the win, CSU outshot the home team 7-5 and took seven corner kicks compared to the Bison's two.

Howard got onto the board first after taking advantage of a corner kick in the 26th minute. Senior Sandra Bond set up on the left side and delivered a beauty into sprinting junior Noelle McCullom, who came up with a header to the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.

CSU tied the game in the 57th minute thanks to goal from Katie Bainbridge after a scrum in front of the net.

Both teams battled hard but the Bison were able to pull ahead late in the second half. Senior Carmen Suarez threw in a scorcher from the sideline. Sophomore Anna Mitchell got under the ball to score the game-winner on a header.

The Bison are back in action on their home turf on Sunday, Aug. 21 at 2 p.m. against Radford.
