WSOC Advances To SWAC Semifinals By Beating Southern

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – The No. 1 Howard women's soccer team advanced to the semifinals of the 2016 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Tournament with a 4-0 triumph over No. 8 Southern University on Thursday afternoon at the PVAM Soccer Complex.

Howard's defense was tremendous as it held Southern (3-14) to just three shots, while the Bison offense notched 11 attempts. HU also had five corner kicks and did not allow the Jaguars to take any.

Junior Gabrielle Emilien, the SWAC Goalkeeper of the Year, recorded a pair of saves during her 90 minutes in goal.

The Bison (13-4-2) got on the board with 3:24 off the clock thanks to sophomore Makela Davidson tapping the ball over to junior Kela Gray, who sent it into the back of the net. Howard scored just before the end of the first half after senior Sara Vaughan gave up the ball to junior Jordan Bynoe for her second goal of the season and a 2-0 lead.

In the 54th minute, Davidson added an unassisted goal before getting back together with Gray, who padded the score six minutes later on a rebounded goal that was originally blocked by SU's goalie.

Howard is currently on a five-game winning streak.

The Bison will face the winner of the No. 4 Arkansas-Pine Bluff vs. No. 5 Mississippi Valley State game.
