HAMPTON, Va. – The Howard volleyball team swept its fourth Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) foe after besting Hampton in three sets on Friday night at Holland Hall.
The Bison move to 15-5 overall and have a 5-0 mark in the MEAC.
Junior Khaila Donaldson led the way with 10 kills, six digs and three blocks while sophomore Courtney Dalton added nine kills. Senior Whitney Fields was close behind with eight kills to go along with three service aces and sophomore Tamia Dockery tallied 26 assists.
The Pirates (3-13, 2-3 MEAC) hit .115 on the night, the fifth straight opponent the Bison have limited below .116.
Reena Richardson and Micah Leavell paced Hampton with 13 and 11 kills, respectively. Brianna Lily had 30 assists and Summer Humes finished with 10 digs.
The opening set was back and forth battle with 11 ties and five lead changes that pushed both teams to the limit. Howard was first to call a timeout after back-to-back errors cut its lead to 10-9. It was Hampton's turn to head to the bench with a slight 19-18 edge. The Bison were ahead 23-21 locked at 23. The two teams exchanged the next eight points before an attack error and kill by Donaldson gave Howard the set, 29-27.
The Bison quickly went up 8-3 to kick off the second set and Hampton needed a break. Howard refused to slow down as it opened the gap to 17-10 made the Pirates use its second timeout. Dockery joined freshman Kira Porter for the block and a service error helped the Bison take the set, 25-15.
Howard doubled up on the Pirates with a 10-5 lead to start the final set. Hampton was able to knot the score at 12 but the Bison soon powered ahead to a 19-15 upper hand and the Pirates burned a timeout. Three straight errors made it impossible for Hampton to close the gap as Howard got the set, 25-17.
The Bison visit Norfolk State on Sunday, Oct. 9 at 3 p.m.
