Howard Tops Bethune-Cookman On Friday Night

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Howard volleyball team took down Bethune-Cookman, 3-1 (25-20, 22-25, 25-19, 25-20), on Friday night in Burr Gym in the 2015 MEAC Championship rematch.

HU improved to 16-5 on the season, while the Wildcats dropped to 4-17.

The Bison had three players finish with double digits in kills, led by senior Katherine Broussard with 16. Junior Khaila Donaldson tallied her eighth double-double of the season (15 kills, 16 digs), while senior Whitney Fields posted 10 kills.

Sophomore Tamia Dockery had 51 assists and senior Morgan Marlbrough ended the night with a match-high 19 digs. Classmate Dominique Cleggett added eight kills and two blocks, while junior Carlise Cardoza had 10 digs.

HU improved to 16-5 on the season, while the Wildcats dropped to 4-17.

Alana Handy paced the Wildcats on 18 kills and 12 digs. J'nai Higgins earned 38 helpers and Alondra Baustista totaled 15 digs.

The two teams traded points to start the match until four straight B-CU errors put the Bison ahead 11-8. Howard stayed in front as more errors plagued the Wildcats and three kills pushed the lead to 21-18 as the visitors called for time. Broussard tallied two kills and Cleggett laid down a hard kill to take the set, 25-20.

Howard had to use a timeout early in the second set after B-CU went up 10-8. The Wildcats kept building on their lead as the gap widened to 18-13 and the Bison needed its second break. Kills from Fields and sophomore Courtney Dalton pulled HU within two, 23-21, but a block ended the set in B-CU's favor, 25-22.

The Bison opened the third set on an 11-7 run, which forced the Wildcats to head to their bench. Back on the court, Dockery got a kill on a quick tap and Donaldson added three more kills. B-CU used its next timeout once the Bison had a 23-18 edge. A pair of errors and a kill by Donaldson closed the set, 25-19.

The Wildcats for quick to call a timeout after Howard got out to a 7-3 lead. Although the Bison held a 14-8 advantage, the home squad burned a timeout due to three straight errors. HU got back on the right foot with an ace by Marlbrough and kills from Broussard, Donaldson and Dalton. Cleggett recorded the final kills for the Bison and a B-CU error ended the match.

Howard will visit Coppin State on Sunday, Oct. 16 at 3 p.m.
