Bison Extend Win Streak To Eight Matches

PRINCESS ANNE, Md.—The Howard volleyball team extended its win streak to eight games by defeating Maryland Eastern Shore, 3-1 (25-19, 23-25, 25-13, 25-22) on Friday night at the Hytche Center.

It was a historic night for junior Khaila Donaldson, who tallied 24 kills and 10 digs against the Hawks. Her impressive performance pushed her career kills total to 1,137, which is the best career mark in program history.

Sophomore Courtney Dalton added 13 kills, while senior Katherine Broussard tallied 11 kills and 19 digs. Classmate Morgan Marlbrough had a match-high 22 digs and sophomore Tamia Dockery dished 53 assists to go along with 16 digs. Senior Whitney Fields had a match-best three blocks at the net.

UMES headed to the bench early after Howard jumped out to a 16-11 lead to begin the match. The two teams exchanged points but the Hawks could not get ahead of the Bison. Broussard gave HU the set-point opportunity and Donaldson finished it off with a powerful kill, 25-19.

The second set was a back and forth battle that started with the Bison taking a slight 13-9 edge. The Hawks fought hard to pull with one, 20-19, and Howard called for time. Out of the break, UMES went up 22-20 on a pair of errors by the Bison. HU managed to tie the score at 23 but a service error and kill by the Hawks closed the set, 25-23 in favor of UMES.

Once again, the set started in Howard's favor when the team went up 9-4 and made UMES use a timeout. The Bison kept the momentum going to extend the lead to 15-8 and the Hawks burned its second timeout. There was no coming back for the home squad as Donaldson's service ace ended the set, 25-13.

Although the final set featured eight ties, there was only one lead change. After trading points, Howard took a 16-12 advantage that had UMES spending a timeout. Donaldson put together three straight kills to help open up the gap to 22-19. Two errors by the Hawks along with kills from junior Jessica Young and senior Dominique Cleggett gave the Bison the match.

Howard returns to Burr Gym on Sunday, Oct. 23 to host Delaware State at 3 p.m.
