Howard Sweeps Series With Coppin State

BALTIMORE, Md.—For the second time this season, the Howard volleyball team swept Coppin State (25-13, 25-13, 25-23) on Sunday afternoon at the Physical Education Complex Auxiliary Gym.

The Bison are riding a seven-game win streak as they remain perfect in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) with a 6-0 mark and move to 17-5 overall. The Eagles fell to 1-20 and 1-6 in conference play.

Junior Khaila Donaldson recorded her eighth consecutive match in double digits behind 12 kills and paired it with 10 digs. She now ranks second in program history with 1,113 career kills.

Sophomore Courtney Dalton added seven kills and two blocks. Senior Whitney Fields had five kills, while sophomore Tamia Dockery handed out 21 assists. Senior Morgan Marlbrough tallied a team-high 11 digs, while classmate Katherine Broussard and junior Jessica Young notched seven digs apiece.

In her first match since Sept. 17, sophomore Olubunmi Okunade made her presence known on five kills and three blocks.

Howard quickly doubled up on the Eagles for a 16-8 lead to open the match. Donaldson and Fields laid down two kills apiece to open the gap to 24-12. Okunade registered her first kill after missing the last seven outings to take the set, 25-13.

CSU struggled to find its footing to start the second set after the Bison went up 15-7. Broussard served for seven straight points, which featured an ace, two blocks and kills from Okunade and Donaldson. The Eagles posted the next four points to pull within 10 but an error ended the set, 25-13.

The Eagles were able to take a slight 8-6 edge in the third set. The Bison responded with an 8-0 run to go ahead 14-8. Senior Briana Jackson, freshman Kira Porter and Dalton added to the advantage but the Eagles started to close in. Although back-to-back CSU errors gave Howard a 24-19 lead, the Eagles strung together four straight points to get within one, 24-23, and force the Bison to call a timeout. Out of the break, an attack error by CSU wrapped up the match.

Guro Froberg had nine kills, while Dominique Madarang tallied 16 assists and 13 digs for the Eagles.

The Bison will visit Maryland Eastern Shore on Friday, Oct. 21. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m.
