HUNTSVILLE, AL --- The Howard women's soccer easily moved its Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) record to 1-1 with a 5-0 shutout of Alabama A&M University on Sunday afternoon at Bulldog Field.
Sophomore forward
Kela Gray, who currently leads the nation in points per game (2.75), added four more points to her tally with her 9th and 10th goals of the season for Howard (5-5, 1-1 SWAC) while junior midfielder
Sara Vaughan (2nd goal), sophomore forward/midfielder
Whitney White (5th) and freshman midfielder
Anna Mitchell each added a score.
The victory also snapped the Bison's five-game road losing streak.
Howard dominated AAMU (0-6, 0-1 SWAC) in all facets of the game; the Bison outshot the Lady Bulldogs 20-2, had a 16-1 shots on goal advantage and took eight corner kicks without allowing one.
White (8'), Vaughan (12') and Gray (26') netted the first half tallies for HU while Mitchell (68') score the first goal of the second half and Gray (75') set the final margin with her second goal.
Freshman goalkeeper secured the first shutout of her career while only having to make one save in the contest.
In three meetings as SWAC opponents (including the 2014 SWAC Tournament), Howard has posted three shutouts against Alabama A&M by a combined score of 12-0.
NEXT UPHoward will host its first-ever SWAC home games in Washington, DC this weekend. The Bison will face Southern University on Friday October 2 at 7 p.m. and Jackson State University on Sunday, October 4 at 1 p.m. at Greene Stadium. Howard played all four of its home games during its inaugural 2014 SWAC season in Vestavia Hills, Alabama.
