WASHINGTON, DC --- A pair of goals by sophomore forward/midfielder
Whitney White proved to be the difference as the Howard women's soccer team defeated the Southern University Jaguars 2-0 in a Friday evening match at Greene Stadium.
For Howard (6-5, 2-1 SWAC), the win was unique in that it was the first-ever Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) win for the Bison in the District of Columbia after Howard played its home games during the inaugural 2014 season on a neutral field.
For White, the first multi-goal game of her career came in some of the worst weather conditions the team has faced all season. Both Howard and Southern (1-9, 1-2 SWAC) battled against heavy rain, a severely waterlogged field and extra slick game balls but White stood out as the only player on either team able to take advantage of the compromised conditions.
In the 37th minute, White was fouled in the box while making a push toward the net and easily finished the resulting penalty kick. Then, in the 85th minute, she added an insurance goal off a left side ground pass from sophomore forward
Kela Gray.
To put White's feat into perspective, the Pasadena, CA native scored two goals all of her freshman season in 2014; she currently has seven tallies with barely more than half of the season completed.
NEXT UPHoward finishes its Homecoming weekend slate with a SWAC match against Jackson State on Sunday, October 4 at 1 p.m. at Greene Stadium.
