WASHINGTON, DC --- Senior
Jenny Ly provided a major dose of theatrics for the Howard softball team in one of the last home games of her collegiate career.
Ly's second home run of the game - a two-run walk-off in the bottom of the seventh - sealed Howard's series sweep over Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference opponent Coppin State with a thrilling 7-6 victory on Monday evening at Nationals Jr. Park.
For Howard (11-21, 5-4 MEAC), the three-game sweep of Coppin State (3-17, 3-3 MEAC) was the first series shutout of a MEAC foe since March of 2012, when the Lady Bison took three from Maryland Eastern Shore in Princess Anne, MD.Trailing 6-5 going into the final inning and registering outs on their first two at-bats, the Lady Bison extended their opportunity after redshirt junior
Jasmine Gammons lined a double into right center to bring Ly to the plate.
The Los Angeles, CA native had already helped Howard come from behind by hitting a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game at 5-5. After pushing CSU pitcher Candice Van Horn to a full count, Ly put a strong swing on a changeup and sent it over the right center field wall - to the delight of her Lady Bison teammates, who mobbed her in celebration at home plate.
"I was just hoping for her not to walk me," Ly said of the at-bat after the game. "I know I hit a home run earlier and we had a runner on base so i just tried to make the most of it."
Back-to-back RBI singles by sophomore
Milan Poindexter and Gammons gave Howard its first lead of the game (2-1) in the bottom of the first. CSU would respond two innings later, opening the top of the third with four straight singles to bring in a pair of runs and take a 3-2 lead. The Lady Eagles added two more runs in the fourth to go up 5-2 on the Lady Bison before Gammons' RBI double and Ly's first home run in the fifth evened the score. Another Coppin RBI single in the sixth gave the Lady Eagles their 6-5 lead and set up Ly's heroics.
On the evening, Ly went 2-for-4 with her two home runs and four RBI. Gammons was 3-for-4 on the night with two RBI, two doubles and a stolen base.
Junior
Janessa Flynn earned the victory in relief by pitching five innings and striking out a season-high eight batters while allowing six hits, three runs, and five walks.
NEXT UP: Howard wraps up its home schedule with a three-game series against rival Hampton University on April 11-12, playing a 1 & 3 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday and a single game on Sunday. Prior to Saturday's games, the Lady Bison will honor their two seniors, Ly and
Briana Banks.
