Softball Strikes Early, Often In Doubleheader Sweep of ECSU

ELIZABETH CITY, NC --- The Howard softball team (5-16) produced a barrage of scoring in a dominating doubleheader sweep of the Elizabeth City State University Vikings on Tuesday afternoon.

HOWARD 11, ECSU 2 (F/5)
Howard strung together back-to-back wins for the first time this season with their series-opening win over the Vikings. The Lady Bison exploded for 11 runs, their highest total of the year.

Senior Al'Asia Davis led the way for Howard, going 3-for-3 at the plate with a pair of RBIs and two runs scored. Freshman Brooklyn Emory was also perfect at bat as she went 2-for-2 with a double, a RBI and a run scored.

HU was able to score early with a three-run first inning due in part to a bit of small ball. The first two runs came home off of sacrifice ground outs by junior Dominque Lawrence & sophomore Milan Poindexter and the third scored after redshirt junior Jasmine Gammons was hit by a pitch.

In the third, the Lady Bison got five runs to come across home plate - three off of the bats of Emory and Davis and two off a single by sophomore Imani Ballard that caused an errant throw.

The next inning proved to be more of the same for HU as the team scored another three runs - all with two outs. A pair of singles and a wild pitch did the damage for Howard,

ECSU would score a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth but their rally fell short due to the mercy rule.

Starting pitcher Janessa Flynn earned the victory with a three inning outing, allowing only one hit and no runs. Sophomore Alex Flynn earned the save by throwing two innings and striking out three while giving up a pair of runs.

HOWARD 20, ECSU 3 (F/5)

The Lady Bison did not slow down in the second game of the doubleheader. The team's 20 runs were the most in a single game since a 20-run outburst against Virginia State on February 23, 2007. Also, for the first time since a doubleheader against Bowie State on March 30, 2011, Howard scored 10 or more runs in consecutive games.

The three-game winning streak the team now has is the longest since the Lady Bison won four straight from April 20-25, 2012.

HU effortlessly set season highs in at-bats (39), runs (20), hits (23), RBIs (18), runs in an inning (9) and doubles (6).

Davis was perfect again as the senior went 4-for-4 with a RBI and five runs scored. Gammons matched Davis' 4-for-4 day in an even bigger way - by driving in 8 RBIs (including a grand slam) and scoring two runs of her own. The home run was only the second of the season for Howard.

HU broke the game open with five, four and nine runs in the first three innings combined.

Sophomore Alexa Walker picked up her first win of the season by going three innings and allowing only one run. Sophomore Tara Castellanos earned her first save of the year by covering the final two innings and logging two strikeouts while allowing two runs and five hits.

NEXT UP: HU will face ECSU for a final game tomorrow (March 18) at noon.
