EVANSTON, IL --- Senior center
Victoria Gonzales posted a double-double of 21 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Howard women's basketball team in an 89-49 loss to Northwestern University on Sunday evening at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
For Gonzales, the double-double was her first this season and the seventh of her career. The last time the Atlanta native posted 10 points and 10 rebounds was February 28, 2015 at home versus Hampton, when she posted career highs of 25 points and 15 rebounds. Also of note: for the first time in her four-year Bison career, Gonzales has scored 20 or more points in consecutive games.
Despite Gonzales' efforts, however, the Bison (0-2) struggled to keep up with its Big Ten opponents, as no other Howard player reached double figures. Junior forward
Sydni Johnson and freshman guard
Shaylon Tarver each had seven points while sophomore wing
Da'Shae Shumate added six points.
While Howard outrebounded Northwestern (1-0) by a slim margin (45-43) and edged the Wildcats on free throws (.692 to .636), the Bison negated their advantages by committing at least 27 turnovers for the second straight game and failing to make a three pointer for the first time since January 7, 2015 against Cornell.
NEXT UPHoward continues its opening season road trip with a game against the University of Arizona on Wednesday, November 18 at 9 p.m. Eastern.
