BALTIMORE, MD --- Same city, different result.
The Howard women's volleyball team made its second trip to Baltimore in three days and returned to DC with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-23, 25-22) sweep of Coppin State University on Sunday afternoon at the Coppin Auxiliary Gym. The win gives Howard (6-13, 3-1 MEAC) a split on the weekend - over a CSU team that was 2-0 in MEAC play - after a 3-1 loss to conference undefeated Morgan State on Friday. It also keeps Howard in second place in the Northern Division.
THE RUNDOWN- Four Howard players finished with at least seven kills: sophomore outside hitter
Khaila Donaldson (game-high 10), junior outside hitter
Katherine Broussard (9), junior outside hitter
Dominique Cleggett (8) and junior middle blocker
Janaya Hampton (7). Donaldson extended her current double-digit kils streak to five games while Cleggett posted an outstanding .889 (8-0-9) hitting percentage in the three sets.
- Freshman
Tamia Dockery and junior
Briana Jackson once again had 10+ assists in the same game. Dockery (team-best 21) and Jackson (12) accounted for all but three of the Bison's 36 assists.
- Junior libero
Morgan Marlbrough was the only player to record 10 or more digs, recording 15.
- Collectively, the Bison finished with 10.0 total team blocks (one solo and 18 assists).
- Howard has two sweeps this season, both coming within the team's first four MEAC contests.
- While Coppin played close throughout the match, Howard was never truly threatened in the contest. The Bison's largest deficit was four points (in the first set); the team never relinquished the lead in set two; and HU briefly fell behind by one in set three before pulling away.
NEXT UPHoward will face Hampton University on Friday, October 9 at 7 p.m. in Burr Gymnasium in a rematch of the 2014 MEAC Championship.
