FARMVILLE, VA --- Despite goals from sophomore defender/midfielder
Isaac Mbappe and freshman midfielder/forward
Victor Guirma, the Howard men's soccer team remained winless on the season after a tough 3-2 defeat by the Longwood University Lancers on Tuesday evening at the Longwood Athletics Complex.
Mbappe and Guirma both scored their third goals of the season, tying for the team lead with junior midfielder
Xavier Rajpaul and sophomore forward
Kyle Celestine.
Howard (0-14-2) struck first in the 16th minute with Mbappe's goal, a free kick set piece assisted by Rajpaul and put in the lower right corner of the net. The Bison tally would stand along until the 57th minute when Willy Miezan of
Longwood (7-6) tied the score.
Guirma put HU back in front in the 71st minute by capitalizing on a ball that Longwood mishandled in the box. However, the Lancers responded once again in the 79th minute AS Longwood's Will Lambert put a six yard shot home.
The visiting Bison were almost able to salvage a draw out the contest - despite a 29-9 shot and 12-2 corner deficit - but failed to stop a top-of-the-box shot from Longwood's Zach Crandall from going in in the 107th minute.
In defeat, graduate goalkeeper
Sam Howard was able to make a season-high 10 saves.
NEXT UPThe Bison will finish the season with three straight Sun Belt Conference matchups, beginning with a home contest against New Jersey Institute of Technology on Saturday, October 24 at 2 p.m. in Greene Stadium.
