PINE BLUFF, AR --- A lone first-half goal was all the Howard women's soccer team needed to earn its eighth victory of the season, a 1-0 shutout of the University of Arkansas - Pine Bluff Lady Lions on Friday evening at Pumphrey Stadium.
Howard (8-7) improved to 4-3 in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) action this season with the win while sending UAPB (5-8, 4-3 SWAC) to its second loss in as many games.
HU's score came in the 33rd minute as freshman forwards
Makela Davidson and
Jasmin Miller connected for a point. The goal was Davidson's second of the season - and first since the season opener vs Radford - and was set up by Miller's first-ever collegiate assist.
The Bison the Lady Lions were even in shot attempts in the game (11 each), with sophomore forward/midfielder
Whitney White taking six. Freshman goalkeeper
Mackenzie Diotte played all 90 minutes in net and earned her third solo shutout with a seven save performance.
Earning the win over UAPB is even more gratifying when you consider that it was the first road game for Howard in three weeks and due to scheduling difficulties the Bison had limited prep time before the start of the contest.
The victory gives the Bison a tiebreaker over the Lady Lions in the SWAC standings: Howard now sits in fifth place over UAPB instead of sixth despite both teams' identical conference records.NEXT UPHoward will look to sweep the weekend and move two games above .500 for the first time this season on Sunday, October 18 when the Bison travel to face Grambling State University.at 2 p.m. Eastern.
