Men's Soccer Falls In Bison Battle with Bucknell

WASHINGTON, DC --- A pair of exciting scores from the Howard men's soccer team nearly provided the home team with its first victory of the season but in the end the "Battle of the Bison" went to the visitors from Bucknell University after a 5-2 defeat of Howard on Tuesday afternoon at Greene Stadium.

Howard (0-12-2, 0-1 Sun Belt) scored the game's first goal for the second time in three home games and did so in impressive fashion. Sophomore midfielder Xavier Rajpaul scored his team-leading third goal of the season in the 37th minute, taking a pass from sophomore forward/midfielder Nigel Grant and looping a shot over goalkeeper Clarke Fox of Bucknell (4-5-4, 0-2-2 Patriot League) into the upper right corner.

HU took that 1-0 lead into halftime and added to it early in the second half. At the 51:00 mark, sophomore defender/midfielder Isaac Mbappe sent a 30-yard lob pass into the box that freshman midfielder/forward Victor Gu irma  headed home while outjumping Fox for the ball.

Unfortunately, the Howard lead would be shortlived, as Bucknell rallied to score a pair of goals (55', 56') in the next four minutes. The visiting Bison would then tack on three more goals (59', 73', 90') to distance themselves from Howard.

Overall, Howard had a very strong outing, staying close to Bucknell statistically (14-12 in shots, 2-1 in corners) while playing stronger offense and more aggressive defense.
