WASHINGTON, DC --- Despite a season best effort from sophomore guard
Jasmine Hill, the Howard women's basketball team dropped a 58-50 contest to the Delaware State Lady Hornets on Monday evening at Burr Gymnasium.
Hill, in her second start of the season, was one of three players to score in double figures for Howard (2-15, 2-2 MEAC) as she netted 15 points on 6-of-16 shooting and added five rebounds. The 15 points were one point shy of her career high set on February 15, 2014 against University of Maryland - Eastern Shore. Junior center
Victoria Gonzales scored 11 points and snagged 10 rebounds to notch her first double-double of the season. Sophomore forward
Sydni Johnson chipped in 10 points, her third consecutive game in double figures and her ninth in 13 games.
Howard opened the game with a quick 10-4 run and led the entire first half, taking a 25-22 advantage into the break. Even when Delaware State (2-11, 1-1 MEAC) fought back early in the second and took the lead, HU found itself up one (34-33) with 13:01 remaining.
That's when DSU redshirt senior forward Tierra Hawkins went on a personal 8-0 run to put the Lady Hornets up seven (41-34) with 8:20 left and ahead for good.
NEXT UP: Howard will have a break until January 24 when the Lady Bison travel to Florida A&M for a matchup with the Lady Rattlers.
