Box Score TALLAHASSEE, FL --- Sophomore forward
Sydni Johnson scored a team-high 18 points while senior forward
Cheyenne Brown and junior center
Victoria Gonzales added 12 and 11, respectively but it was not enough to overcome a large first half deficit as Florida A&M defeated the Howard women's basketball team, 65-51, in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) contest at the Al Lawson Center.
Howard (2-16, 2-3 MEAC) fell into a huge hole in the first 20 minutes by missing 20 of their first 28 shots and turning the ball over 11 times. FAMU (5-13, 2-4 MEAC) meanwhile, rode the scoring of Olivia Antilla's 12 first half points and a 53 percent shooting (16-of-30) effort to take a comfortable 39-20 lead into the locker room.
To its credit, the Lady Bison refused to quit and came out in the second half, using a 20-2 run to pull to within 48-41 at the 11:38 mark of the second half. The spurt was led by Brown, Johnson and Gonzales, who combined for 16 of the run's 20 points.
However, that was as close as Howard would get as the Lady Rattlers used a 12-2 run to extend their lead to 60-43 to all but put the game away.
Howard shot, 29 percent for the game and were outrebounded 43-34 by Florida A&M. The Lady Rattlers shot 52 percent for the game and were led Antilla's 19, Alicia Jones' 10 and Shalunda Burney-Johnson's 11 off the bench.
NEXT UP: Howard will try to return to .500 in MEAC play when it travels to Daytona Beach, FL to take on the Bethune-Cookman Lady Wildcats on Monday, January 26 at 5:30 p.m.
