AMES, IA --- Sophomore forward
Sydni Johnson registered a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds but it wouldn't be enough to keep the Howard women's basketball team from falling to the Iowa State Cyclones, 90-44, in the second game of the ISU Cyclone Challenge on Monday evening at the Hilton Coliseum.
Johnson went 4-of-12 from the field, 1-of-2 from beyond the arc and a perfect 2-of-2 from the free throw line in tying redshirt sophomore guard
Te'Shya Heslip for the team lead in double-doubles with two.
Unfortunately for Howard (1-12), the positives ceased there against Iowa State (8-2). The Lady Bison shot 16-of-66 from the field, their worst shooting percentage of the season (.242). The Lady Bison offense sputtered because of the team's largest assists deficit of the year (10 assists to ISU's 27).
HU took an early 6-3 lead with 17:13 left in the first half and held a one-point edge (15-14) at the 11:25 mark. Iowa State would close the half by outscoring Howard 29-13 and taking a 43-28 lead into halftime.
Instead of chipping away at a manageable deficit when the second half began, the Lady Bison went through their worst drought of the year. After Heslip scored on a fastbreak layup with 58 seconds to go in the first to cut ISU's lead to ten points, the Cyclones went on a 34-0 run over the next 13-plus minutes of game action to extend their lead to over 40 points.
ISU freshman center Bryanna Fernstrom led all scorers with 18 points.
NEXT UP: Howard will face Brown University on December 30 at 6 p.m. ET in the 3rd Place game of the Cyclone Challenge.
