WASHINGTON, DC --- Sophomore guard
James Daniel III and senior forward
James Carlton combined for 35 points in Howard's 57-47 victory over Indiana University-Purdue University-Indianapolis on Monday evening in Burr Gymnasium.
The win was part of the Bison's four-game slate in this year's Gotham Classic and moved Howard (6-6) back to .500 on the season while dropping IUPUI's record to 2-8.
Daniel finished with game highs of 18 points and three assists while Carlton shot an impressive 6-of-9 from the floor and 5-of-7 from the line to add 17 points. Sophomore guard
James Miller chipped in nine points and four rebounds while sophomore center
Marcel Boyd pulled down a career best 13 rebounds - nearly half the total of the entire IUPUI squad.
Howard produced one of its best defensive efforts of the season, holding the visiting Jaguars to a .283 field goal percentage (15-of-53). That number was the third-lowest shooting percentage the Bison allowed this season and the IUPUI's 15 made field goals were tied for the second-fewest HU allowed this year. In addition, Howard outrebounded IUPUI by 16, the fourth time the Bison have grabbed 10 or more rebounds than their opponents; not surprisingly, Howard is 4-0 in those games.
"This was a great defensive effort from our team tonight. We played tough aggressive defense from start to finish tonight," Howard head coach
Kevin Nickelberry said after the game. "Going in, we knew we had to dominate in rebounding and score off of our defense and we did that tonight. I am proud of how this team competes and the sky is limit if we can keep improving in certain areas. This was a good win against a IUPUI team that had some good wins this year against Ball State and Milwaukee."
NEXT UP: Howard continues its Gotham Classic schedule with a cross-country matchup against Pepperdine on Wednesday, December 17 at 10 p.m. Eastern.
